Before the makers of InBooklet sold out to QuarkXpress they left us InDesign users a present in In Booklet SE. SE is an option from the InDesign menu to output to one of the basic formats including booklets. It was not without limitation although.

When you output a publication to a new document such as my recent 5.5 x 8.5 newsletter booklet selecting to add bleed and margins within the InBooklet dialog adds that amount to the size of the booklet. If you do that you have to redefine the document size and margins before printing.

Instead leave the those dimensions to 0p0 and specify the bleed in the created document. The new document will retain the margins specified in the original document.

One of the things InBooklet SE lacks is the ability to create larger signature sizes. In order to do that add the margins and bleed in InBooklet. After output as a booklet change the document size to something like 12 x 18. Then zoom way out and align and rotate pages as required.

Note: When rotating you will probably want to select all objects on the page group and then use the rotate tool. With all objects selected the anchor point may not be in the center of the spread so you will need to set a new anchor point.
